MAYOR GOODWIN PROCLAIMS APRIL 14 AS ARBOR DAY
(Charleston, W. Va.) – Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin proclaimed April 14 as Arbor Day during a celebration at Mary C. Snow Elementary School and joined members of the Municipal Beautification Commission and students to plant a flowering dogwood tree.
“Trees play an essential role in mitigating soil erosion, facilitating stormwater drainage, and providing habitats for birds and other wildlife,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. “I am thrilled to join the students at Mary C. Snow to plant a tree in celebration of Arbor Day in West Virginia and calling attention to the importance of trees in beautifying our communities, promoting tourism, and enhancing business development.”
National Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April, but many states observe Arbor Day on different dates based on the best tree planting times for the area. West Virginia celebrates Arbor Day on the second Friday of April.
“In 1872, the Nebraska Board of Agriculture established a special day to be set aside for the planting of trees. This holiday, Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than one million trees in Nebraska and is now observed throughout the nation and the world,” said Anna Forbes, Chair of the Municipal Beautification Commission. “Charleston’s Municipal Beautification Commission serves as the City’s Tree Board. With the Mayor’s support, we are pleased to continue to honor the important role trees and urban canopies play in beautifying our City and fostering economic development.”
