MAYOR GOODWIN SUBMITS FOOD TRUCK PROPOSAL TO CITY COUNCIL
Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin submitted a proposal to create a robust food truck strategy for the city to the Urban Renewal and Economic Development Committee of Charleston City Council. The Goodwin Administration put forth this framework to ensure City Council has ample time to work with brick and mortar restaurants and food trucks to create a clear ordinance that will capitalize on the growing trend of food trucks and the foot traffic they bring to a community.
“Food trucks have the unique potential to add vitality, culinary creativity and life to the streets of Charleston,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. “I want to create an ordinance that not only produces a welcoming and vibrant place for food trucks, but also takes into consideration the investment our brick and mortar restauranteurs have made in our community. At the same time, we must make sure the use of public streets and sidewalks are safe and convenient for all citizens.”
“Charleston’s current vending ordinances and regulations are not developed to adequately address the evolution of mobile food trucks,” said City Attorney Kevin Baker. “Revisions to the current ordinance are crucial in order to create clear rules that will encourage food trucks to come to Charleston and co-exist with local restaurants. This framework is the first step in creating an ordinance that will allow the mobile food truck industry to flourish and increase foot traffic to our local restaurants and businesses.”
This draft plan will be reviewed by the Urban Renewal and Economic Development Committee of Charleston City Council where they will evaluate, discuss and seek public input in order to develop a new ordinance to be reviewed by the full Council.
