MAYOR AND CHIEF SWEAR IN 11 NEW POLICE OFFICERS—LARGEST CLASS SINCE 2005, ATTRIBUTE SUCCESS TO ROBUST RECRUITMENT STRATEGY

(Charleston, W. Va.) – Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin and Chief of Police Scott Dempsey swore in 11 new police officers to the Charleston Police Department (CPD) this morning at City Hall—the largest class since 2005; and attribute success to robust recruitment strategy.

“We are thrilled to welcome the largest class of new officers in nearly 20 years to the Charleston Police Department – a milestone that reflects our City’s unwavering commitment to public safety, and the success of the Department’s robust recruitment efforts,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. “I look forward to getting to know our new officers and seeing the fresh perspectives and energy they will bring to our community.”

“It is truly an exciting day for the Charleston Police Department to swear in 11 new team members to our CPD family,” said Chief of Police Scott Dempsey. “I am proud to see so many men and women join our force and see our roster numbers rise.  We always strive to be the best law enforcement agency in the State of West Virginia. To attract this large hiring class will certainly serve the citizens of Charleston well.”

These 11 officers will start their training tomorrow, December 17, with the Charleston Police Department Training Division. Then on January 13, 2025, the officers will train at the West Virginia State Police Academy where they will receive 15 weeks of law enforcement training. The officers must complete over 850 academic hours, followed by a 20-week Field Training Program where they will be directly supervised, trained, and observed by the leaders of the police department.

To further the Charleston Police Department’s recruitment efforts, it will conduct its next hiring test on January 11 at 9 a.m. at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center. Interested candidates can apply online, or walk in on test day. Questions can be directed to the Charleston Police Department Training Division at 304.348.1091.
