MAYOR GOODWIN PROVIDES 11/30 UPDATE REGARDING RESTORATION OF GAS SERVICE TO WEST SIDE, RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO IMPACTED RESIDENTS

(Charleston, W. Va.) – Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin shared updates (11/30) regarding the restoration of gas service to the West Side and resources available to impacted residents.

 

Thursday’s updates included:

  • Mountaineer Gas Company (MGC) crews continue their work on Charleston’s West Side.
    • MGC crews are working to address water that has caused gas service interruptions to some homes.  Customers experiencing such issues should call the MGC dispatch at 1-800-834-2070.
    • MGC has contracted with 10 companies to address appliance issues (HVAC/hot water heaters/stoves) in homes.
    • The paving company, contracted by MGC, has paved more than 50 of the more than 270 utility cuts (excavations) and will be working 6 days a week.  
    • MGC is in the process of notifying customers, by letter, in the affected area that they will receive a bill credit.
  • United Way of Central WV has fielded a total of 1103 calls, 53 texts, dozens of emails and nearly 320 walk-ins since Monday, November 13. Together, United Way and Bream Neighborhood SHOP have distributed nearly 900 heaters and over 2,000 blankets.
    • The United Way team is available at 304.340.3500 and 211 to troubleshoot any needs – heaters, blankets, meal delivery, etc.
  • Bream Neighborhood SHOP is open today (11/30) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for showers, heaters, blankets, and laundry.
  • The MLK, Jr and North Charleston Community Centers are open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for showers.  Comfort Kit (toiletries) provided by the American Red Cross and blankets are available at the centers. More than 125 blankets and nearly 100 comfort kits have been distributed through the centers.
  • The American Red Cross Appalachia Region, in collaboration with the Charleston Fire Department has served 342 people, installed 295 alarms, and made 147 homes safer.  Anyone needing a smoke alarm can call 304.340.3650 or visit www.bit.ly/FreeSmokeAlarms. 
  • The Charleston Fire Department has installed a total of 65 carbon monoxide detectors.  Anyone needing a carbon monoxide detector can call the United Way of Central West Virginia at 304.340.3500 or call 211.
  • West Virginia Health Right has distributed 3,311 meals, 756 heaters, 611 electric blankets, 102 regular blankets, 553 cooking appliances, and 150 hats/gloves.
    • WVHR will provide meal service at 519 Central Avenue from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. Thursday (11/30) and Friday (12/1).  Meal distribution will be available Saturday (12/2) from noon to 2 p.m. and Monday (12/4) through Friday (12/8) from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Manna Meal will continue to serve meals from 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. daily at the old Save A Lot parking lot (corner of Virginia Street and Park Avenue).  
  • To report water outages, folks should call 1-800-685-8660 so that West Virginia American Water can put a service order into the system.
