MAYOR GOODWIN JOINED WERTZ AVE COMMUNITY FOR SPOOKTACULAR RIBBON CUTTING CELEBRATION AT RIVERVIEW PARK
(Charleston, W. Va.) – Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin today joined the Wertz Avenue community for a spooktacular park dedication at Riverview Park – including a ribbon cutting celebration, costume contest, pumpkin decorating, scavenger hunt, face painting, and crafts. The park’s new/updated amenities reflect community input received by the Charleston Land Reuse Agency (CLRA) in 2022.
“As we celebrate the opening of Riverview Park, we’re thrilled about having a vibrant space that brings our Wertz Avenue community together and showcases what we can achieve when we listen to the voices of our neighbors,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. “Together, we’ve created a space that honors our past and looks boldly to our future. Riverview Park is more than a gathering space – it’s the heart of a shared vision for a stronger community.”
The Charleston Land Reuse Agency sought public input for the Riverview School property in 2022 at the request of Mayor Goodwin and as part of its ongoing commitment to community engagement. Public input was obtained via door-to-door outreach by volunteers, an online survey, and a public input chalkboard on the property. There was consensus that “picnic/gathering facilities” were wanted on the property; recreation opportunities – especially for children were strongly desired; and desired physical improvements should include “new playground equipment”, “places for grownups to sit while their kids play”, and “a picnic shelter”.
“We’re excited to provide a space for our community to connect, play, and grow,” said Parks and Recreation Director Rashaun Poore. “The transformation of this property reflects our commitment to creating spaces that bring people together and provide opportunities for recreation, learning, and wellness. Riverview Park is a place where community happens, and we’re looking forward to seeing the positive impact it will have in the Wertz Avenue community.”
Park amenities include two new playground structures, a swing set that includes baby swings and an accessible swing, 20’x30’ shelter with picnic tables, benches and shade systems, two restroom facilities, fencing, grill, parking, resurfaced basketball court with adjustable basketball goals, updated lighting, and updated asphalt.
