SPECIAL EVENTS TO AFFECT TRAFFIC THROUGH LABOR DAY WEEKEND | LIVE ON THE LEVEE CANCELLED

The coming holiday weekend means several special events in Charleston, and those events mean that traffic will be affected Thursday afternoon through Saturday afternoon.

Thursday, August 31, 2017: Union Mission “Overrun Overdose”

This evening, Union Mission is organizing “Overrun Overdose,” an event that combines 5K run along Kanawha Boulevard and a concert in Haddad Riverfront Park. As a result, Kanawha Boulevard will be closed between Court Street and Greenbrier Street, starting at 5:30 p.m. The 5K begins at 7 p.m., and once it is complete, the Boulevard will be reopened east of Capitol Street. However, the Boulevard between Court and Capitol streets will remain closed to traffic until the completion of the Charleston Distance Run on Saturday.

Saturday, September 2, 2017: Charleston Distance Run and 5K

The Charleston Distance Run is a 15-miles course that starts at the State Capitol and ends at UC Stadium. As runners follow the 15-miles through downtown, South Hills and the East End, traffic will be affected throughout Saturday morning on several streets, at times with a full street closure and at others with police and race volunteers restricting traffic while runners are on the course in those areas.

Streets affected include: Kanawha Boulevard, Clendenin Street, Virginia Street, the South Side Bridge, Ferry and Thayer streets, MacCorkle Avenue, U.S. 119, Oakwood Road, Bridge Road, Loudon Heights Road, Washington Street (east of the Capitol complex), Chesapeake Avenue, Court Street, Ruffner Avenue, Piedmont Road, Morris Street and Hansford Street.
