Exhibition Dates and Location
The exhibition will open to visitors March 1 - March 31, 2024 at the City Service Center.
Eligible to Participate
Any student in Kanawha County, grades K-12, can participate in the Youth Art Month Juried Exhibition. This includes public, private, alternative and home school students.
Submission Guidelines
- Artist must submit original work.
- One submission will be accepted per artist.
- All mediums will be accepted.
- 2D works should not exceed 18" x 24".
- Sculptural works cannot exceed 10" in depth.
- Artwork must be labeled with the artist's first name, grade, and school. An "Artwork Label" template has been included on this page.
- Artist or parent/guardian must email a photo of artwork using the "Email Artwork Photo" link on this page. Subject line must include 2024 YAM and artist's full name.
- Artist or parent/guardian must submit the "Juried Exhibition Form" included on this page.
Submission Deadline
Artwork and form must be received no later than February 23, 2024 at 5P.
Award Categories
Artwork will be evaluated by a panel of professionals and evaluated based on originality, creativity, overall design, and composition. Awards will be presented for the following categories:
- Best of Show
- Mayor's Choice
- Grades K-5: 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, Honorable Mention
- Grades 6-8: 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, Honorable Mention
- Grades 9-12: 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, Honorable Mention
Teachers/Program Coordinators/Workshop Hosts
We want to make sure our parents/guardians are engaged in the submission process for our Youth Art Month Initiative. To help ensure a seamless process, we have created a "Note to Parent/Guardian from Teacher/Program Coordinator" template you can use to send home with students/program participants. Youth Art Month Artist Workshops
The Office of Public Art and Parks and Recreation Department have teamed up to host two Youth Art Month Artist Workshops in preparation for the Charleston Youth Art Month Juried Exhibition.
Join local artist, Brianna Taft, for the Fun with Color and Abstraction workshops which will introduce participants to color concepts and abstraction through painting and drawing. All materials and supplies will be provided.
Workshop 1 will take place February 20, 2024 from 6:15P - 7:15P at the MLK, Jr Community Center (314 Donnally Street).
Workshop 2 will take place February 22, 2024 from 6:15P - 7:15P at the Kanawha City Community Center (3511 Venable Avenue).
