Mayor Orders City Flags Lowered to Half-Staff
Mayor Goodwin ordered all City of Charleston flags at all City owned facilities be displayed at half-staff, beginning Saturday, July 24, in honor of the life and service of former Charleston City Council Member Rick Burka who passed away early this morning. The flag flown at City Hall will be presented to the family. City flags will remain at half-staff through the day of services.
“Council Member Burka was passionate about serving the people of his community—both on the Kanawha City Community Association and Charleston City Council,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Council Member Burka’s family during this very difficult time.”
Burka represented Ward 18 for 10 years and resigned in 2018 due to health concerns. Burka served as vice chairman of the Ordinances and Rules Committee and served on the Facilities Committee and the Streets and Traffic Committee. Burka founded the Kanawha City Community Association in 2005 and served as its President until his passing. He is survived by his wife, Pam; son, Josh, daughter-in-law Sabrina, and daughter, Mallory.
