Applications for 2022 Charleston Youth Council Now Open

Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin announced today that applications for the 2022 Charleston Youth Council are now available.  The initiative engages youth in the Capital City and provides them a voice in developing public policy and community development initiatives.  Charleston youth in grades 8 - 12 are encouraged (with parental or guardian consent) to apply at: charlestonwv.gov/youthcouncil by Friday, October 29, 2021. Youth Council terms will run from January 1 – December 31, 2022.

“Our inaugural Charleston Youth Council was active and engaged in telling us things their peers wanted to see in Charleston. We expect our second group to be just as vocal and bring wonderful ideas,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. “We aim to bring youth-focused programming throughout all areas of our city and our Youth Council is a critical part of this effort.  In addition, members earn community service hours and acquire valuable leadership skills.”

Youth Council members will serve one-term appointments and no more than 2 consecutive terms. Members will be expected to participate in no less than six Charleston City Council meetings and volunteer a minimum of 20 hours which may include City events, roundtable discussions, project planning and Youth Council meetings.

Funds to help support the Youth Council and its projects will come from the Mayor’s Contingency Fund
