KANAWHA BOULEVARD STREETLAMPS TO UNDERGO MAINTENANCE

The City of Charleston and the West Virginia Division of Highways recently completed an assessment of the streetlamps along the Kanawha Boulevard from Greenbrier Street to East Avenue. The assessment revealed 35 streetlamps need to be removed immediately to repair foundational damage. The lights and fixtures will be completely removed by Tuesday, May 7. The Division of Highways will remove the streetlamp poles Wednesday, May 8 – Friday, May 10.  Once the streetlamps are removed, an assessment will be completed to identify exact needs as it relates to fixing structural issues with the foundations, repainting, repairing and reinstalling the streetlamps.  The maintenance process could take several months to complete.

“We have made inspecting our infrastructure a top priority during the past several months.  It is important we help ensure the safety and security of residents and visitors alike. Our team is working in partnership with the West Virginia Division of Highways to ensure this issue is addressed in an efficient manner,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. “These crucial infrastructure updates highlight the importance of being fiscally responsible and growing long-term savings. In order to maintain existing infrastructure, we must maintain reserve funds.”

The City of Charleston is communicating with all residents and businesses along the Kanawha Boulevard by going door-to-door. In addition, the Charleston Police Department will conduct extra patrols in the area during the evening hours. Individuals and groups utilizing this area of Kanawha Boulevard after dark are encouraged to wear reflective clothing and/or carry flashlights.
