MAYOR GOODWIN SHARES 11/19 UPDATES REGARDING RESTORATION OF GAS SERVICE TO WEST SIDE, HELPING IMPACTED RESIDENTS WITH NEEDS

(Charleston, W. Va.) – Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin received updates this morning – Sunday, November 19 – as part of a continued proactive effort to ensure continued coordination, collaboration, and communication between entities as work continues through the weekend.

Sunday’s updates included:

  • Mountaineer Gas Company (MGC) has 51 crews working through the weekend – 34 for construction and 17 for inspection and reconnection. As of this morning, gas service has been restored to approximately 600 customers, including Jarrett Terrace Apartments – with approximately 200 additional customers who are ready for inspection and reconnection.
    • MGC continues to share safety information – including what to do if you smell natural gas, and making sure carbon monoxide detectors are working.  
  • United Way of Central WV has fielded a total of 728 calls, 32 texts, dozens of emails and over 120 walk-ins since Monday, November 13. The team delivered meals and heaters yesterday and plans to deliver meals again on Monday for any Mary C Snow student who could not get to the school.
    • The United Way team will be available through the weekend at 304.340.3500 and 211 to troubleshoot any needs.
  • Bream Neighborhood SHOP has distributed nearly 400 heaters, over 1,400 blankets and both hot meals and food for folks to take home
    • Bream Neighborhood SHOP is closed for the weekend but will open tomorrow (Monday 11/20) for showers, heaters, and blankets (1 p.m. – 4 p.m.).
  • The MLK, Jr and North Charleston Community Centers are open 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. for showers. Comfort kits (toiletries) provided by the American Red Cross and blankets are available at the centers. Approximately 75 blankets and more than 30 comfort kits have been distributed through the centers. 
  • The American Red Cross Appalachia Region, in collaboration with the Charleston Fire Department has served 109 people, installed 113 alarms (*corrected from previous calculation error), and made 49 homes safer.
    • Anyone needing a smoke alarm can call 304.340.3650 or visit www.bit.ly/FreeSmokeAlarms. 
    • In addition, the American Red Cross will be going door to door on Monday (11/20) to install smoke alarms.
  • West Virginia Health Right has distributed 1,220 meals, 662 heaters, 405 electric blankets, 90 regular blankets, 414 cooking devices, and 85 hats/gloves.
    • Meals will be served at 519 Central Avenue on Monday (11/20), Tuesday (11/21), and Wednesday (11/22) from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Carbon monoxide detectors have been provided by Kanawha County. The Charleston Fire Department installed 19 carbon monoxide detectors on Saturday, bringing the total installations to 40.  
    • To request a carbon monoxide detector, call the United Way of Central West Virginia at 304.340.3500 or 211.
  • Educating folks on the safe use of portable heaters continues to be a top priority.
  • To report water outages, folks should call 1-800-685-8660 so that West Virginia American Water can put a service order into the system.
