MAYOR GOODWIN SHARES 11/18 UPDATES RECEIVED REGARDING RESTORATION OF GAS SERVICE TO WEST SIDE, HELPING IMPACTED RESIDENTS WITH NEEDS

(Charleston, W. Va.) – Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin received updates this morning as part of a continued proactive effort to ensure continued coordination, collaboration and communication between entities – even through the weekend as Mountaineer Gas Company crews and community organizations continue their work on Charleston’s West Side.  

“We have a lot of folks who will working through the weekend – including 51 Mountaineer Gas crews who will be working to restore gas service on Charleston’s West Side and the many community groups who have come together to provide meals, blankets, heaters, and other essentials to the folks in our community. If you, or someone you know, needs assistance through the weekend, please call United Way at 304.340.3500 or 211,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. “In addition, our Charleston Fire Department, the American Red Cross, and Mountaineer Gas are working diligently to provide safety information regarding use of space heaters, service restoration, and smoke alarms to folks in our community.”    

Updates included:

  • Mountaineer Gas Company has 51 crews working through the weekend – 34 for construction and 17 for inspection and reconnection. As of this morning, gas service has been restored to approximately 467 customers – with approximately 258 additional customers who are ready for inspection and reconnection.
  • United Way of Central WV has fielded a total of 713 calls, 25 texts, dozens of emails and over 100 walk-ins since Monday, November 13. The team delivered meals yesterday and will again on Monday for any Mary C Snow student who could not get to the school.
    • The United Way team will be available through the weekend at 304.340.3500 and 211 to troubleshoot any needs.
  • Bream Neighborhood SHOP has distributed nearly 400 heaters, over 1,400 blankets and both hot meals and food for folks to take home.  Bream Neighborhood SHOP is open 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. daily for showers and laundry service.
  • The MLK, Jr and North Charleston Community Centers are open 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. for showers. Comfort kits (toiletries) provided by the American Red Cross and blankets are available at the centers. More than 70 blankets and more than 30 comfort kits have been distributed through the centers.  
  • The American Red Cross Appalachia Region, in collaboration with the Charleston Fire Department has served 108 people, installed 120 alarms, and made 48 homes safer.
    • Anyone needing a smoke alarm can call 304.340.3650 or visit www.bit.ly/FreeSmokeAlarms.  
  • West Virginia Health Right has distributed 600 heaters, 280 electric blankets, 350 electric cookers and served over 1,000 meals.  Lunch is being served today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 519 Central Avenue.
  • Carbon monoxide detectors have been provided by Kanawha County. The Charleston Fire Department has installed 21 carbon monoxide detectors. To request a carbon monoxide detector, call the United Way of Central West Virginia at 304.340.3500 or 211.
  • To report water outages, folks should call 1-800-685-8660 so that West Virginia American Water can put a service order into the system.
